Darren has been passionate about weather since he was a young kid growing up in Richmond BC. Since snow was rare in Richmond, Darren would keep a close eye on the weather for any sign of snow. Before the days of the Internet, Darren would sometimes create a satellite loop by using a VCR to record the satellite image from the Weather Network every hour. After the Internet became popular, Darren created a daily amateur forecast on the Vancouver Weather Page from 1997 to 2012.
During the rare occasion that a thunderstorm would form in the Greater Vancouver or Fraser Valley area, Darren would call his friends to join him in a cross city storm chase. This usually meant sitting in traffic and waiting at traffic lights as the storm raced off to the east. Occasionally while watching the Weather Network, they would talk about a severe thunderstorm somewhere on the prairies or in Ontario and Darren would long to see one of these storms.
After getting the opportunity to move to Calgary at the very end of August of 2013, Darren was eager to get to chase real storms. It was a long wait to storm season 2014 until he could finally go out and storm chase so he spent his time watching videos and reading about storms. Each storm season since then, he has attempted to chase every severe or near severe storm within an hour or two drive from Calgary. Darren married his wife Poi Yee in June of this year.
